Sputnik I and its sibling, Sputnik II, are formed from galls that formed at the juncture of limbs and trunk in Scotch pine trees, long after they were too old and gnarly to be harvested (by my dad who planted them) for Christmas trees. What you see as legs are actually what’s left of upturned limbs, turned upside down and sanded and shaped as you see them now. The top of Sputnik I is a slice taken from the surface of a maple log, where a limb once grew.
