Racecar is one of a very few pieces on this website made from wood I didn’t harvest on my own property. Actually, it’s pawlonia, and came from my mother in law’s property in the mountains of North Carolina. It’s an extremely light and fast growing wood, without any really interesting grain characteristics. The maple wheels on this car are also things I didn’t harvest; they’re factory made. So is the china doll head that I found in the old homestead ruins on the back acreage. I also didn’t mine the copper that encases the axles.
But I put it all together. Right here. The wheels are eccentric, so it wobbles when you roll it. And, the wood has no finish on it. It feels better that way.
